  We took advantage of the beautiful weather and spent time outside journalling with our buddy class. Grade 6 students can do practice PATs on the website  https://questaplus.alberta.ca/app/practice-test-access There is also review material in the Google Classroom under PAT REVIEW. MATH:   in math grade 5's looked at 2D Shapes and did a reflection on our year as a mathematician Grade 6's worked on decimal place value and will be reviewing for the upcoming PAT  it is recommended that students practice calculation skills  SCIENCE: we did an experiment analyzing soil characteristics and will be doing an experiment on analyzing chromatography and then bringing all of the concepts we've learned together in a final project there will be a review test on Friday the 16th or Monday the 19th depending  SOCIAL: Continuing to learn about the Provincial government and their role in Alberta ELA :  Continued with our Multi Genre project. Ask your child which topic and genres they chose.

  Even though a short week, it was busy as usual. Had a lovely walk to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon where we wrote 7 Directions poems and sketched.  MATH:   in math grade 5's fnished up with probability and started Shape & Space Grade 6's are finishing up their surveys and had another practice computation PAT. Some students need work on lining their numbers up properly when adding & subtracting. They will be bringing these home if they need to work on things.  SCIENCE: we did an experiment analyzing fabric characteristics SOCIAL: talked about the election results  See our schools results at  https://studentvote.ca/results/district_results/53/7/25 discussed how laws are passed in the Provincial Government  ELA :  continued our work on figurative language and learned a new term (Oxymoron).   Our week was a bit hampered due to the smoke (no walk and being stuck inside), however students were very adaptable.  A reminder that cell phones should not be out/visible during school hours.  The first PAT on writing was a success grade 6 students worked hard. The next ones are not until the end of June. We are so proud of their hard work. We hope that the smoke clears up and we are able to do a walk next week on Wednesday morning.  ELA:  students reviewed newspaper writing before the PAT  started poetry and will continue with poetry for the rest of May getting close to finishing Mars Patel podcast: Ask your child what they liked about it? Mr. Lang & Mrs. Bonanno had a meeting with all of the grade 5/6 community on Wednesday afternoon to remind students of the expectations of an elementary school. With big class sizes and new students still coming in lunch time and classrooms have been too chaotic lately. There have been many reminders and redirections that have been affecting classroom dynamics. Clear expectations of lunchroom rules were reiterated.  We have been exploring Asian History month by watching videos about different Asian countries and Asian Canadians as well, this will be done throughout the month of May.  On Monday afternoon we met Elder Harley at the pond and learned about the surrounding area and some of the plants (Wolf Fat & Bergamont) that are native to the area.  ELA:   this week the grade 6's did a practice ELA picture prompt PAT online.   The 5/6 team would like to share with parents an invitation to a virtual session on  Understanding the Relationship between Social Media and Youth Well-Being, Tuesday May 2, 2023  from  6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.  The link to the Microsoft Teams Event is  here . There is also more information on the University School website about the presentation.  It was a great first week starting our Trickster residency. The students are creating a performance around the theme: How do we care for our land? The prop that we have been using is a crash mat! So much fun. There will be an opportunity to see the performance next Thursday, more information to come from Mr. Lang.  In math , grade 5 students have been exploring volume and measurement and have started planting a garden to help with measurement and graphing later on. Grade 6 students have wrapped up their understanding of angles, polygons and triangles.   Students finished their book clubs on Wednesday and will be working on a project to show their understanding of their novel in both visual and written format. It was great to see our students start and finish a whole novel, have interesting conversations with their peers and challenge themselves to read something different.  In science we have moved onto a new unit of Evidence & Investigation. In this unit students will investigate and learn about a variety of evidence (fingerprint analysis, foot/tire/other prints, soil samples, handwriting analysis, paper chromatography, fabric/hair analysis and DNA) and link it to a possible source, observe human and animal footprints to infer the direction and speed of travel, and identify evidence of human and animal activity outdoors, and make inferences based on the unique characteristics of the evidence observed.   It was nice to have everyone back refreshed from spring break, although a short week it was jam packed.  ELA: we planned and started writing our informational essays this week. Published copies will be due next week Book Clubs are almost done, students will be working on a choice project about their books to show their understanding Math: converting decimals to fractions and the reverse has been our focus in math for grade 5 Grade 6 students have been working on algerbra and will be moving to geometry afterwards Science:   We are finishing up our Chemistry unit with having students make 4 short Bill Nye inspired videos to demonstrate their learning of the unit  Social: a continuation of looking at the Canadian Charter as well as beginning to look at local government. This tied into our presentation Wednesday afternoon.  We went on a community walk Wednesday morning and had Councillor Gian Carlo Carra from Ward  9 come in and talk to us about local government.  For Phys Ed, Alien In-
