We survived our first full week! It was a great week with wonderful weather which made going outside and enjoying the fresh air a real treat. 

There was a continuation of getting to know each other and our expectations of how to be a student in our grade 5/6 community. Students are slowly getting the hang of things but still need frequent reminders to stay on task and to talk quieter. We are a big class of 30 students and I know that this will be a work in progress. 

We have spent time this week ensuring students know both their emails and passwords and are able to connect with our Google Classroom. Each student was tasked with sending an email about themselves as a learner to myself to practice sending a proper and professional email. Students are in charge of keeping track of their own email and password this year so they have access to Google Classroom and their emails both at school and at home. Students have also been getting a refresher in techonology. Learning how to use different functions in Google Docs.

In Science, we began looking at the levels of the forest. Students were challenged with finding examples of organisms that would be in each level of the forest. We have begun exploring how forest ecosystems interact and categorizing producers, consumers, decomposers and biotic/abiotic components of a forest. 

In writing, we have started exploring story writing with picture prompts this week and having students create short stories based on the picture they are given. This helps me see how they structure their stories and where we need to begin to continue growing as authors in the class. We also used play dough as a form of inspiration to make an idea & then write about it. 

In grade 5 math we have been working on place value up to a million. Students have been doing different activities such as scavenger hunts and learning new strategy games like Dots & Boxes http://dotsandboxes.org/ Grade 6 Math has continued to explore place value and students have practiced their understanding of standard and expanded notation. We have started a "Candy Rush" challenge for the students to demonstrate their understanding of place value and comparing numbers. 

We are also beginning our "reading timeline" project Monday. Students have unofficial homework of thinking of a list of books they have loved and that they have connected with. This can include books from their toddler/preschool years to now. 


We are continuing our read aloud of Ban This Book, the themes of decesion making and who makes decsions are coming up in this book, which will tie in nicely to our social studies curriculum this year. 


In Social Studies, we have been interpreting and exploring maps to see how the class interacts with different maps and what they notice. We will be utilizing various kinds of maps throughout the year in Social Studies so it has been a great jumping off point before heading into citizenship. 


We went for a Community Walk today to begin to make connections to our community and build stamina for the outside work that we will be doing throughout the year. We will be going on a walk next week on Wednesday September 21 after lunch, to observe different trees in our community.

  We took advantage of the beautiful weather and spent time outside journalling with our buddy class. Grade 6 students can do practice PATs on the website  https://questaplus.alberta.ca/app/practice-test-access There is also review material in the Google Classroom under PAT REVIEW. MATH:   in math grade 5's looked at 2D Shapes and did a reflection on our year as a mathematician Grade 6's worked on decimal place value and will be reviewing for the upcoming PAT  it is recommended that students practice calculation skills  SCIENCE: we did an experiment analyzing soil characteristics and will be doing an experiment on analyzing chromatography and then bringing all of the concepts we've learned together in a final project there will be a review test on Friday the 16th or Monday the 19th depending  SOCIAL: Continuing to learn about the Provincial government and their role in Alberta ELA :  Continued with our Multi Genre project. Ask your child which topic and genres they chose.

  Even though a short week, it was busy as usual. Had a lovely walk to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon where we wrote 7 Directions poems and sketched.  MATH:   in math grade 5's fnished up with probability and started Shape & Space Grade 6's are finishing up their surveys and had another practice computation PAT. Some students need work on lining their numbers up properly when adding & subtracting. They will be bringing these home if they need to work on things.  SCIENCE: we did an experiment analyzing fabric characteristics SOCIAL: talked about the election results  See our schools results at  https://studentvote.ca/results/district_results/53/7/25 discussed how laws are passed in the Provincial Government  ELA :  continued our work on figurative language and learned a new term (Oxymoron). Welcome to Ms. Roa's grade 5/6 weekly blog. Every Friday a new blog will be posted with some snippets of what we have accomplished in the week. A link to this blog will be posted in your child's Google Classroom (starting next week) and on our school website. You can alternatively bookmark or save the link on your device. I look forward to sharing our learning with you throughout the year.  What a great 6 first days of school! We even had an assembly lead by Mr. Lang and Mrs. Bonnano, it felt great to gather as a whole school community and see everyone in one place.  We took the opportunity to be outside journaling, looking at natural objects. Students were introduced to the journaling strategy "Compass Points" where they reflected on four different feelings. In our art journals, we also practiced upside down drawing which was a good challenge, even for the teacher! We have been building up our stamina in both reading and writing this year.
