Welcome to Ms. Roa's grade 5/6 weekly blog. Every Friday a new blog will be posted with some snippets of what we have accomplished in the week. A link to this blog will be posted in your child's Google Classroom (starting next week) and on our school website. You can alternatively bookmark or save the link on your device. I look forward to sharing our learning with you throughout the year.

What a great 6 first days of school! We even had an assembly lead by Mr. Lang and Mrs. Bonnano, it felt great to gather as a whole school community and see everyone in one place.

We took the opportunity to be outside journaling, looking at natural objects. Students were introduced to the journaling strategy "Compass Points" where they reflected on four different feelings. In our art journals, we also practiced upside down drawing which was a good challenge, even for the teacher!

We have been building up our stamina in both reading and writing this year. We began the novel "Ban this Book." It has great connections to decision making which will be part of social studies this year as well as advocacy. Students also had the opportunity to visit the library and pick out books. Books are allowed to be brought home (I'm really encouraging them to read nightly). In writing we have been doing short daily writing prompts and some students have even shared their work with the class.

In science, students have been starting to look at the importance of Trees and Forests in our daily lives and the different wasy we use the forest. We started with an activity of brainstorming what we know and wonder about the topic and moved to a scavenger hunt of abiotic (non-living) and biotic (living) things in Alberta's forests. We also play a who am I game connected to the topic.

In math, we have be working with different challenges to help us activate our mathematical thinking. We have built shapes, tried to solve the value of shapes, figure out different numbers to multiply and even did a check in to see what we remembered from last year. Starting Monday, we will be splitting into grade 5 and 6 math groups taught by the 5/6 team and Ms. Copithorne.

The Google Classroom will be up next week. Students have received an inviation to join in their CBE email. If you are new to the school, we are still in the process of activating accounts. At this time, there are no assignments posted. It will be used ocassionally through the year, mostly as a place to post resources for assignments or hand in assignments completed digitally.
