Mr. Lang & Mrs. Bonanno had a meeting with all of the grade 5/6 community on Wednesday afternoon to remind students of the expectations of an elementary school. With big class sizes and new students still coming in lunch time and classrooms have been too chaotic lately. There have been many reminders and redirections that have been affecting classroom dynamics. Clear expectations of lunchroom rules were reiterated.

We have been exploring Asian History month by watching videos about different Asian countries and Asian Canadians as well, this will be done throughout the month of May.

On Monday afternoon we met Elder Harley at the pond and learned about the surrounding area and some of the plants (Wolf Fat & Bergamont) that are native to the area.

ELA:

  • this week the grade 6's did a practice ELA picture prompt PAT online. This will help them for the actual one on May 17th. Grade 5's did the same prompt in a google doc to get the feel for the expectations for next year.
  • Students finished their book club projects, next week we will be giving feedback to each other on their final products.
  • we will be returning to newspaper writing next week in order to prepare the grade 6's for their PAT
  • poetry will be our next unit

MATH:

  • grade 5's had a quiz on patterns and algebra, they did great! They will get this back on Monday.
  • We started probability in grade 5 math. We did an experiment with tossing a coin 30 then 50 times and compared the results.
  • Remember to have your child practice multiplication & division if they are still unsure.
  • grade 6's are continuing their work on probability.

SCIENCE:

  • last week we learned about animal tracks and started looking at fingerprints and will be looking at handwriting, tire tracks and fabrics in the coming weeks.
  • we continued listening to the Mars Patel podcast which connects with both Science and ELA
SOCIAL:
  • we will have a social test next week on Tuessday this will be on local government (multiple choice, vocabulary matching and short answer). Students can review their work in their duotangs as well as the text book and other handouts Google Classroom under social local government.
